A Guide to Prepping Your Wig

A Guide to Prepping Your Wig

One question we often get about our wigs is if it is ready to wear.
The short answer is yes, but there is much more that goes into it for personal wear.
We do the basic plucking and actually having the wig made, but from there, the owner would need to install or have it installed correctly for their lifestyle even before the styling process.

Here are some general guidelines for prepping your wig to wear as well as styling pointers.

Prepping your Wig:

The goal is to look natural and stylish with quality hair

-Consider texture type for a custom wig. Decide what texture is best for your lifestyle, time, maintenance technique, geographical climate, etc.
- Consider Closures vs. Frontals. Frontals cover the entire front of your hair line thus are not as breathable, but have multiple parting choices. Closures are cooler since they cover less of your scalp but you are limited to usually one part. Prepping your wig could include designating your hair part.
-Plucking. As previously mentioned, our wigs come generally plucked, but often we have a certain look in mind. Ensure plucking is to your liking.
-Wash wig once purchased. This will prep your hair for wearing and ensure it does not have a mannequin wiggy look. Try our Step 1 Shampoo and Conditioner that is free of parabens.
-Schedule to have wig installed by a Pro.Whether custom or factory made, if you want your wig to be worn for several weeks, it should be glued/sewn on by a professional- this may be you as well. Having someone unexperienced do it could cause damage to your own hair aside from the wig.
-Ensure you have a protective hair style for your own hair while you wear the wig.  Utilize braids, wig caps, bobby pins, and hair ties to keep hair comfortably flat.

Wig Styling Pointers

-Ask stylist for any pointers or direction for maintenance and styling before leaving the salon. Ask them to show you and not just do it.
-Use professional glue if installing.
-For styling and maintenance, use salon-worthy hair care to ensure your hair holds and lasts. Proper care is essential for the longevity of natural hair. Just like extensions, wigs can also last at least a year and be refreshed when maintained.
-For short-term wear, style on a mannequin to make it easier and not miss any pieces on the back side.
-When not in use, properly store wigs on busts.

Key Takeaway:

Prepping a wig properly is just as essential as the styling and maintenance. This helps the wear to last longer and ensures that it is the style you are looking for.
